Dolores Del Río | Art Deco Hollywood

Dolores Del Río was a silent screen star in the 1920s, a luminous icon of 1930s Hollywood, and then became one of Mexican film’s greatest stars. Born María de los Dolores Asúnsolo López-Negrete in 1904,  she was one of the first and most beloved Latin American crossover stars in Hollywood.

Dolores Del Rio

She had a torrid love affair with Orson Welles (10 years her junior), and was at his side during the filming and fallout of Citizen Kane.

He once called her “the most exciting woman I’ve ever known,” and though she ended their four year relationship due to his infidelities, his daughter Rebecca later said: “My father considered Dolores the great love of his life. She is a living legend in the history of my family.” According to Rebecca, until the end of his life, Welles felt for del Rio, “a kind of obsession.”

She. Is. Amazing.

And not just amazingly beautiful (though she is, obviously) but also an evocative, wonderful performer. Her work is well worth seeking out, and her iconic style makes her a fabulous art deco inspiration from the golden age of Hollywood.

1930s Hollywood Style | Claudette Colbert

The pure embodiment of 1930s Hollywood style, Claudette Colbert is perhaps now remembered best for her Academy Award-winning role in 1934’s It Happened One Night. She was a prolific and talented actress in both screwball comedies like that Capra classic, and dramas such as Cecil B. DeMille’s Cleopatra. Born Lily Emilie Chauchoin in France, her family …

    Inspiration | Metropolis

Easy to forget, a century later, how influential the art around Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis was (and is). So much incredible, inspirational art deco/modernist art sprang up around it. The fonts! The design! The posters! To be fair, that futurist look might be a little dark for some weddings (unless they are dystopian or …

    Boardwalk Empire Fashion

Hello all! Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend so far. I’m very excited about tonight’s return of one of the most stylish shows on television, Boardwalk Empire. This is a show that started out looking pretty, but being not-so-great (in my most humble of opinions), but by the end of last season it was …

Today’s Art Deco Hollywood style icon is the lovely Miss Myrna Loy. It was her 1934 role as Nora Charles that catapulted her to a much deserved stardom, though she had worked steadily in small silent parts earlier in her career as well . She was a phenomenal actress, comedienne and one of the great beauties …
